Civil Rights for Corporations?

Ever since I went to Occupy Dallas two weeks a lot of words the slightly disorganized and confused protestors said keep sticking in my head. One such sentiment is when I asked a protestor (Luis Davis) what he wanted to see at the end of the movement; was it more rights? less regulation? a constitutional amendment? an Occupy presidential candidate? what? He said to me emphatically: "No, none of that, this isn't a civil rights movement. We just want to be heard." Mistake number one, no clear message. But that is off topic, I keep thinking of how he said "This is not a civil rights movement." Hm, well one enemy all Occupy protestors seem to have claimed is "corporate person-hood." They don't think it's right that corporations can use money as language, ie. Super Pacs. Well, if these protestors are so set on striping these corporations of their rights, could one then claim this movement is for civil rights after all?
The civil rights of the corporations.
I know, I know. It seems far fetched: fighting over the rights of an inanimate object. Well honestly, a corporation is not even that, it's more fighting over the rights of an idea. But, instead of thinking of it as fighting over the rights of an idea, first consider this country gave that idea rights. Now, can you see the civil rights movement? I know it may be a little 'out-there' but our country is still in a state of deciding exaclty which rights to afford to these ideas, these corporations.
It remains to be seen. But next time the Occupiers are doing something stupid on your TV screen and you question aloud, "What are they even fighting for?" Maybe consider, what are they fighting against?

Frogs for the Cure...HUGE OPPORTUNITY!!

I am so proud to be involved with the Frogs for the Cure group at my school. This year we produced an AMAZING flash mob video. If the video receives 100,000 views the Today Show has promised to feature it, we really need views! Check it out, it's inspiring and joyful, plus Mark Cuban came to support. Pretty neat, right?

Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

Occupy Dallas

I went to Occupy Dallas on Wednesday which turned out to be the protestor's final day outside of Dallas City Hall! I was very sad to see some of my new found friends arrested and mistreated on WFAA8's live feed last night. I hope this package conveys a sense of the way the camp really felt. The occupiers might be annoying but these people were harmless. The man waving good bye to me at the end of the package was a graduate of TCU's nursing school. I saw him on the news last night and I am a little worried about him. Anyway enjoy,

TCU Swim and Dive talks about Big 12 switch

TCU a football Tweet heart?

The above graphic is a visual rendition of ALL of @TCU_Athletics tweets for a period of 31 days. The size of each word is representative of how many times that word was used. For example, TCU was clearly the word or phrase used most often over that span of 31 days. This visual explains the swimmers and divers feelings that the student body may not realize that all TCU sport were effected by the switch to the Big 12 Conference.

Feel free to click on the graphic to enlarge and see all of the words clearly!

Some highlights from the 2011 Schieffer Symposium

As I said A LOT, of social media! I guess this is where journalism is headed!

Meeting BOB SCHIEFFER!

I guess it's like they say, hard work gets the rewards! Bob stopped in to thank me for volunteering at the Schieffer Symposium and gave me about 45 minutes of his time! We talked about everything from the future of local newspapers, to how I can get a J-O-B! It was a great reminder of what I set out to do in the industry, and hey, he is a TCU grad, so if he can do it I can do it!

A note on the Symposium:
A wonderful experience! I got to meet both Arianna Huffington and Brit Hume briefly. Huffington commented on my heals saying if I could last a night in those I must be a hard worker! As I always say "Flats are for quitters." I met many journalist from Fort Worth's local papers, and the whole experience reassured me that I do have a future in this industry! Also hearing the perspectives of some of the greats in our field was very compelling. One thing that was cemented in my head: Twitter has arrived! To follow me: @MKN_TCU To see some great shots from the event that the Fort Worth Star Telegram Captured, click here

My photos, captured from my phone, aren't quite as good!

The Society of Professional Journalists comes to TCU

On Sunday, the Society of Professional Journalists came to TCU for an all day conference on finding careers in journalism.

I made numerous connections at this conference. One of the most memorable moments was getting some one on one time with investigative reporter Brett Shipp. Seeing his passion was a true inspiration.

I learned invaluable lessons at the Convergence break out session. I found myself some new Twitter followers, and learned how to use Twitter as a tool to commit 'acts of journalism.'
Thank you so much to the Society of Professional Journalists!
